Manasquan, St. Rose to face off — and give back — this Saturday

February 7, 2013

MANASQUAN — Inspired by the Coaches vs. Cancer movement, which originated in the college ranks but has since also tricked down to the high school level, the Manasquan girls basketball program decided to make Saturday afternoon’s highly anticipated matchup with St. Rose about more than just basketball.

The Coaches vs. Cancer program encourages coaches, their teams, and local community members to join in the fight against cancer by participating in awareness efforts, advocacy programs and fundraising activities.

The Warriors and Purple Roses will be doing exactly that when the two teams meet at 2 p.m. at Manasquan High School.

“With the St. Rose game being a more high-profile game and with a lot of local people attending, I thought this would be a good game to do this for Coaches vs. Cancer,” Manasquan head coach Lisa Kukoda said on Monday night. “It’s a great cause.”

Along with the teams wearing colors to support the cause — the Warriors will be wearing pink shoe laces, for instance — there will be fundraising activities going on throughout the game to raise money, including a bake sale near the main entrance of the gym.

All proceeds will then go directly to the American Cancer Society.

“We are looking at a bunch of ways to use the game to support this good cause,” Kukoda said.

The first-year coach acknowledged the importance of athletic teams giving back to the community that supports them. Just prior to the season, the Warriors also donated their time helping out with the Hurricane Sandy relief effort.

“It is great to have the support of the community,” Kukoda said. “It is great to be able to use that as a means for a good cause. We’re happy to be giving back.”

Kukoda noted the owner of The Spring Lake Manor, John Nagle, as the sponsor for this year’s Coaches vs. Cancer event.

“He is making a donation and will be helping out with some of the things we will be doing during the game,” she said.

A full-game story on the matchup between local rivals Manasquan and St. Rose will be available in the Feb. 14 edition of The Coast Star.
