Roman steps down as St. Rose girls basketball coach

March 30, 2012

BELMAR — Joe Roman, head coach of the St. Rose girls basketball program, has stepped down from his position with the team.

Roman could not be immediately reached for comment.

The news of Roman’s resignation was confirmed by St. Rose Athletic Director Chuck Rutan on Friday morning.

“Being in my first year as the athletic director at St. Rose, I thought Joe did a great job handing the pressures of the season,” Rutan said. “He always had the team under composure and displayed all components of a successful coach. He and his coaching staff did an outstanding job.”

Roman leaves the Purple Roses after nine years with the program. This past winter, he led St. Rose to a record of 29-2, as the team captured both the Shore Conference Tournament and the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Non-Public A titles.

Rutan said the process of replacing Roman will be “a difficult one” and that the administration will be putting together a committee to screen candidates.
