Biserta, Donner bring experience

December 9, 2011

WALL — The Crimson Knights may have a more inexperienced club than in years past, but do carry a couple of weapons with big match experience in senior Steve Biserta and junior Drew Donner.

As a sophomore in 2009-2010, Biserta captured the District 23 championship in the 112 lb. weight division. Following his strong sophomore campaign, Biserta elected to take his junior season off, feeling he needed some time to away from the sport to refocus.

I was a little burnt out last year,” said the senior prior to practice on Friday afternoon. “Coming back, my head is clear. I am more refreshed.”

Now back for his final season, Biserta is looking to take on a strong leadership role for the Crimson Knights and head coach Brian Fischer.

“I want to help the team get better, we are a little less experienced than we have been,” Biserta said. “I want to help the guys with their technique and other things.”

Biserta admitted that he still needs more work to get back to full-strength, but feels the desire to wrestle is back to go along with the technique that never left him.

“I definitely have to get into wrestling shape, but technique-wise, everything came back pretty quick for having a year off. I am ready to go.”

The senior is leaning toward wrestling in the 152 lb. weight division this year and is excited to see how he stacks up against the tough competition of the Shore Conference. Despite missing a year, Biserta feels he can duplicate, if not surpass the success he accomplished two seasons ago.

“I want to be a district champion,” he said. “I want to place top three in regions and make it to Atlantic City.”

For Donner, the junior is hoping to feed off the momentum of a strong 2010-2011 campaign. Last year, as a sophomore, he compiled 17 wins in the 140 lb. weight division, on his way to a third place finish at the District 23 Tournament. By finishing in the top three, Donner earned a trip to the Region 6 Tournament, where he fell in the preliminary-round.

With the taste of a late-season push fresh in his mind following the year, Donner dedicated himself to a strenuous offseason in hopes of advancing even further in 2011-2012.

“Last year I didn’t really go to [wrestling] clubs in the offseason,” said Donner. “This year I have been more a part of it, lifting and going to the clubs more.”

Donner plans to wrestle at 160 lbs. this season and feels he can be a major contender in the competitive weight class. Like his teammate Biserta, Donner has dreams of making it to the New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association [NJSIAA] Championships in Atlantic City.

“I feel like I can wrestle as well as anyone in the conference,” Donner said.
