St. Rose edges out Squan 2-0 in pitcher’s duel at Wall Municipal

May 11, 2011

In local baseball action  — St. Rose  moved to 17-1 on the season earlier today, earning a 2-0 victory over Manasquan in a classic pitching duel.

Senior Shayne Smith picked up the win for the Purple Roses, allowing just two hits while striking out five Warrior batters over five innings.  Smith’s teammate, senior  Chris Napolitano, entered the game in the sixth inning for the Roses and pitched two scoreless innings to preserve a St. Rose victory.

The Roses earned the first run of the game on a sacrifice-fly RBI by senior Steve Frost in the top of the fourth inning, which scored senior Sean Stewart to give St. Rose a 1-0 lead.  Stewart had led the inning off with a double.

The team earned a little cushion in the top of the seventh inning, when St. Rose junior Chris Reynolds scored on a wild-pitch to give the Roses a 2-0 lead.

Manasquan senior pitcher Alex Branch was outstanding for the Warriors in the game,  going six strong innings.  With nobody out in the top of the sixth,  Branch worked out of a bases-loaded jam, but the Warriors could not capitalize in their final two at bats.
