Trenton Catholic ends another St. Rose quest for a state title

March 9, 2011

The St. Rose girls basketball team’s quest for a state title ended tonight, as the Roses were defeated by Trenton Catholic, 37-32, in the NJSIAA Non-Public South B final.

It was the second year Trenton Catholic ended the team’s season, also beating St. Rose in the South B semifinal in 2010.

After a low scoring first half found the Roses down 11-9, the team put together a 14 point third quarter to take  a 23-20 lead over Trenton Catholic heading into the final quarter.  A 3-pointer by St. Rose junior Samantha Clark to start the fourth quarter gave the Roses a six-point lead [26-20], but Trenton Catholic would come storming back.

An 11-0 run by Trenton Catholic after Clark’s 3-pointer, gave the Iron Mikes a 31-26 advantage with 1:50 remaining in the game, a lead they would never relinquish.  The Roses tried to claw back in the game, cutting the Trenton Catholic lead to three points with 38-seconds left.  However, Two free-throws by the Iron Mikes, sealed the game for Trenton Catholic.

This is just a brief summary on the Roses state sectional final.  For a complete game story, pick up the Mar. 17, 2011 issue of The Coast Star.

On a personal note, I’d like to thank St. Rose head coach Joe Roman, his staff, and the Purple Roses and congratulate them on a terrific season.
