Ding! Ding! Ring the bell for Round 3- Squan girls set to take on Point Borough in NJSIAA playoffs tomorrow

March 1, 2011

Whether you are a Coast Star or Ocean Star reader, you have certainly been kept up-to-date on the growing girls basketball rivalry between C-Central Division foes — Manasquan and Point Pleasant Borough — in 2010-2011.

This season, the Warriors and Panthers split the season series 1-1, each winning their respective home game.

The two teams also shared the C Central Division crown, with their only losses inside the division coming from each other.

Tomorrow, in the quarterfinal of the NJSIAA South II playoff, the two teams will settle who got the best of who this year with a rubber match, as the Panthers will host Manasquan, with tip-off scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Point Borough High School.

If you are a fan of the Warriors, you have to be excited about how the team is playing right now.  Manasquan earned a 76-46 win over Haddon Heights in the first-round  on Monday, showing signs of dominance on both ends of the floor.

In the first meeting with the Panthers, the young-upstart Warriors were still coming together as a unit and had a lot of trouble handling the full-court press in a rowdy Point Borough High School gym.  Manasquan will handle the pressure better this time around on the road, as they did in the second meeting with the Panthers — in which the Warriors earned a victory at Manasquan High School.

Since the loss to Point Borough in the beginning of the season, Manasquan has also earned wins over quality Shore Conference teams: Holmdel, St. Rose and Middletown South, all of which play  an in-your-face, pressure style of defense.

With both the Warriors — #6 seed — and the Panthers —#3 seed — being heavy favorites in their round-one  games, it was likely the two squads were gearing up for a third meeting.

“We have been preparing for a while now,” said Warrior junior Gretchen Fay of playing Point Borough on Wednesday.  “They have a good press and we are going to work hard tomorrow [Tuesday] at practice.”

Perhaps I am bias being a beat writer for Manasquan, but I feel this time of the year it is about the stars shining brightest in the biggest situations and I feel the Warriors have the two biggest stars on the floor in junior Michaela Mabrey and freshman Katelynn Flaherty.

However, if you ask my co-worker Greg Domorski — Point Borough’s beat writer for The Ocean Star —, I’m sure he will have just as many reasons for why he thinks the Panthers will win.

Prediction: Manasquan 62 – Point Borough 58

I feel like if Manasquan can get solid production out of it’s other 3 starters then they have a chance to pull off the upset on the road. Mabry and Flaherty won’t be able to win this alone.

    Alexander,

You are right it will take a team effort, I just like having Mabrey and Flaherty late in a tight game when you need big buckets.
Gretchen Fay had a big game for the Warriors on Monday [11 points] and both senior Brigid Gannon and freshman Samantha Sullivan have the capability to score 8-14 points a piece when they are on their game. For my prediction I am figuring Mabrey/Flaherty will spilt approx. 40-45 points and you will get about 15-20 from the combined other three.

Thanks for your continued interest in the blog–
